Candidates must have attended Providence for a minimum of one semester.
Only Juniors (rising Seniors) are eligible (minimum five semesters completed).
Beginning with the freshmen class who enter ninth grade in the Fall of 2016 (this year 2018-2019 Junior class), the minimum cumulative grade point average for election into the NHS will be a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (five semester cumulative unweighted GPA).
Candidates must demonstrate good character, respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, citizenship. Honor code violations, cheating, detentions, cutting class, ISS, and OSS will result in disqualification or removal from National Honor Society.
Candidates must have demonstrated leadership both in schools and in the community from the ninth through the eleventh or twelfth grade. Examples include elected or appointed positions held in school, community or work, elected student body, class or club officer, committee chairperson, team captain, newspaper editor, community leader, work area manager, etc.
Candidates must have demonstrated service to the school and the community from the ninth through the eleventh or twelfth grade. Service can be done with a group or individually, in or out of school, and it must be done on behalf of others (not including family members) for which no compensation (monetary or otherwise) has been given. Examples include homeless shelters, Meals on Wheels, blood drives, Friendship Trays, day care youth worker, Candy Striper, school clean-up campaign, usher at school events, peer tutor, canned food drives, etc.
Requirements to remain in Good Standing:
Members must complete 6 hours of in school service as well as 6 hours of community service every semester. Community service hours may only be completed at specific locations outlined in Volunteer Organizations section of this website.
Members must attend both Fall and Spring School Service Projects. If a member cannot attend, they must notify their advisor and will have to complete 3 additional community service hours.
